The Migrant Protection Protocols Are Back: What You Should Know

On January 21, 2025, the Migrant Protection Protocols (MPP) were reinstated under the Trump administration. If you’re seeking asylum or know someone who is, this change matters. MPP—often called “Remain in Mexico”—requires asylum seekers to wait across the border while their case moves through the U.S. court system.

This policy originally began in 2019, was paused in 2021, briefly revived, and finally shut down in 2022. Now it’s back, and many are once again being forced to wait in unsafe conditions far from legal help.

What’s Changing with MPP

  • Return to Mexico: Many non-Mexican nationals arriving at the southern border are being sent back to wait in Mexico. People face real danger there—kidnapping, assault, lack of shelter, and no reliable access to food or medical care.
  • Legal Help is Hard to Get: Most asylum seekers don’t have access to lawyers while stuck across the border. That makes it extremely difficult to present a strong case.
  • No More CBP One App: With the app now shut down, people are left with fewer ways to take the next step.

Why This Matters

The new version of MPP raises serious concerns. People are being sent into unsafe situations, without the protection they’re entitled to under U.S. law. There have been legal challenges before, and many worry the same problems are happening again.

Supporters of MPP say it helps reduce unauthorized crossings and keeps court dockets more manageable—but the cost for those affected is steep.
