Southern Border Entry Suspended Under New Executive Order

On January 20, 2025, President Trump signed an executive order that stops most migrants—including asylum seekers—from entering through the southern border. The order calls the current situation an “invasion” and brings in military support to enforce the shutdown.

What’s Changed? Here’s a Quick Breakdown

  • Asylum Blocked: Migrants can no longer request asylum at the border, even at official ports. Only rare cases may be considered, and that’s up to top officials.
  • Legal Basis: The administration is using Article IV of the Constitution and Section 212(f) of the Immigration and Nationality Act to justify these actions.
  • Programs Canceled: The CBP One app is down, and all appointments are gone. Parole options for Cubans, Haitians, Nicaraguans, and Venezuelans have been cut.
  • Remain in Mexico Returns: Asylum seekers now must wait in Mexico for their hearings.
  • Military Deployed: At least 10,000 troops are being sent to support enforcement, expand detention space, and restart border wall construction.
  • New Rules for Migrants Inside the U.S.: A registry is being created for those without lawful status. Anyone applying for entry must now provide full medical and criminal records—or be denied.

What This Means for You

The border is now closed to most new migrants. Asylum routes have been cut, and legal challenges are likely—but for now, these changes stand. We may also see more unsafe crossings and rising risks for families trying to find safety.
